"perched"

on outcrop of rock, i sit in thought
i watch rising tentacles, toxic fraught
smoke with chemical trails, on outcrop of rock

monument to the guide, a lone tree here too
hunched, wise inside, i can take a rope
climb down, follow this line

suckers and sticks, and flies, and stings
great beauty and Euclidean beasts
can i swim in the tentacle swarm?

fleeting, like dreams and damp bedsheets
concrete, monolithic shepherds - cities
like those beasts sheared, sheen

a spark of the mountain at night
when all the merchants are asleep
and thieves freelance, sheep bleat

a quiet stroll through a gaping maw
quiet brick teeth and plaster, the maw smiles
the moon sails, clear sails, in raw waters

on outcrop of rock, wearied, well fought
scared to swim again, concussion and shellshock
